The Importance of Changing Locks
We always recommend changing locks on a new home, whether on a house or an apartment and also on a new business. We have very good reasons for doing this and we have dealt with many unfortunate situations that have occurred to clients of ours when locks weren’t changed. One such event happened recently to a girl in her 20’s living by herself in a house purchased by her parents and she did not get the locks changed upon moving in.
In this situation by the time our client had called us she had, in the space of 2 years since she moved in, experienced the following:
- 3 separate times where she had returned to find the front door unlocked, a door she rarely uses as she leaves through the garage
- Upon one time returning home to find a plant tipped over on the landing of the stairs with no explanation
- Someone ringing her doorbell repeatedly at 4 am in the early morning
It was finding the plant tipped over that got her to finally call us. Because of the seriousness of the situation, a young lady living alone and repeating threatening occurrences, we recommended immediately changing the locks of the property, despite a long drive. (We do work in rural areas & outports for larger locksmith and security hardware installation jobs) Through thorough communication with our client we determined what we would need to secure the property and arrived that night and completed a change of locks on the first day. In this case we changed all the actual lock hardware as some of the locks had design flaws that put security at risk. And afterwards we reinforced all the doors to protect against ways burglars commonly enter homes, prying hinged doors open, kicking doors inwards, through-door attacks on the deadbolt, prying glass sliding doors open, breaking glass on door windows to reach in and unlock etc.
